So, this is my first post. I've never done this before and I think it will be interesting to be able to look back and see just how much I can reasonably change my lifestyle to reduce my effect on the environment. I hope to have lots of useful tips and information to share with others on my journey. Problem: reduce plastic bottles My first action has been to research alternatives to some of the most common plastic generated from my home. Shampoo bottles, hand soap, washing up liquid, shower gel and the numerous plastic bottles generated from cleaning products. We will start with the personal care products. I should say at the outset that we are not made of money and we need, as far as possible, to break even on this venture and not spend loads more than we do now. Solution: buy in bulk I have Googled away and concluded that the best way to cut the plastic is to... ...buy in bulk. I found a website called Biggreensmile, and they do shampoo, hand soap and washing up liquid in big 5l bottles. They are still plastic but instead of 20 - 25 bottles I will have one large bottle that I will find a use for or recycle. The products are environmentally friendly and contain no palm oil. The initial outlay is a bit scary but they should last a long time! I am also trying compostable plastic food bags although I intend to cut down on plastic bag use overall. So, this is my first post. Making a start I am starting by taking a serious look at plastic packaging and how I can reduce the amount of plastic waste that my home generates. I felt pretty despondent when looking around the shops....at the sheer amount of plastic there is. I know we can recycle some plastics but plastic is made from oil so reducing plastic waste overall is a good thing. That said, I am not in the 'all plastic is evil' camp. I use plastic storage at home. Disposable plastic on the other hand is evil. Our lasse fair attitude to this stuff means that our oceans are becoming clogged up with absolutely unnecessary waste that we have generated out of convenience.
